It's easy to instruct when you’re the expert - you have the knowledge, but people don't like to be told what to do - that's where coaching comes in...
Instructing is very much passing on existing knowledge from your brain. Coaching on the other hand is a completely different relationship between coach and client. Instead of passing on information from your knowledge base you tap into the client's knowledge base and work alongside them. This relationship is much more of a partnership between two equals than one of an instructor passing on knowledge or information.
As the picture indicates this relationship is a side by side one
supportive and empathetic not directive and authoritative.
This relationship boils down to the ability of the coach to ask good questions to elicit responses from the client that will help them see the pathway they need to follow to achieve their goals. It is also equally about the coach listening and the client being heard. Listening to understand as opposed to listening to speak or contribute. This difference is the key two successful coaching there are some clear behaviours that need to be brought by the coach to the relationship.
They are:
  • R ecognise - the inherent worth of all human beings
  • E liminating - bias and stereotype
  • S peaking - with people
  • P ractice - empathy
  • E mpower - people to change
  • C reate - an environment of trust
  • T reat - clients as experts of themselves
As you can see this beautiful acronym spells out 'RESPECT' and it is a fantastic foundation from which coaching should be performed.

Stages of Change

As you may know from Prochaska and DiClemente’s ‘Transtheoretical Model’ from the 1970's also known as ‘Stages of Change Model’. the process of change is not easy, there are many steps, and we may also move backwards as well as forward through these stages; here are those stages:
  1. Pre contemplation
  2. Contemplation
  3. Preparation
  4. Action
  5. Maintenance

Trust Builders

There are a number of relationship builders that can be used by a coach to help improve trust build rapport and strengthen the overall relationship for better outcomes. These are:
  1. Have unconditional love for your client
  2. Show empathy (be a good listener)
  3. Being humble
  4. Establish rapport with good eye contact and body language
  5. Under promise and over deliver (don't try to look good & do the opposite)
  6. Help the client find the answers (if you weren't there what would they do?)
  7. Confidentiality - very important
  8. Staying on the client's agenda and not oversharing

If these points resonated with you then you'll probably already be coaching well if some didn't then there may be an opportunity to improve your coaching skills either way your clients will be grateful for your ability to help them navigate the pathway of change towards their chosen goals. Good luck, go for it coach!!!
